More paper work

I was visited by the man from administration again yesterday. I learnt that his name is Isaac. He said he was having difficulty placing me in the departmental hierarchy. “There are no rules to cover your position,” he said, “For instance, I don’t know what category of hotel you are allowed, if you have to travel.”

“Five star,” I said.

“That’s impossible,” he said. “Only the minister and the commissioner travel five star.”

“Why are you asking me, if you don’t want to take my word for it?”

“I thought you might be reasonable.”

Me reasonable? That suggests that my attitude in this matter could be seen as unreasonable. What a thought. I don’t have an unreasonable synapse in my brain.

Isaac went away, but he was back a few hours later. “Will you accept three star?” he asked. “That puts you on the same level as chief directors.”

“That will never do,” I told him. “You may have noticed that my carpet is smaller than that of a chief director. I will only accept three star accommodation, if my carpet is upgraded immediately.”

I thought that was the end of that, but today a man with a tape measure arrived to measure my carpet. Before the day was over I had a full size carpet, artificial Persian, just like a chief director. Not bad for someone who was retrenched last year.
