Wessel Ebersohn’s sixth rule of thriller writing
You need a hero, either male of female. Never a heroine. A heroine is a pretty-in-pink type who has to be rescued by the hero. The world has got past that sort of thing – at least the people who can read have.
And your hero needs to be an engaging character. More even than the other characters in the book, the readers must want to know more about the hero.
If I’m not mistaken, in the schools where writing is taught they call the hero the protagonist. Forgive them for that. It is very important to the kind of people who teach others that they sound intelligent. And a little, short word like hero does not help you to sound intelligent. I only mention this so that when you come across the word, protagonist, you know what it means.
I didn’t until I looked it up.
